Pretty Shouldn't Hurt

Abstract

This project will address the effect of the U.S. beauty standards on Black women. The mainstream image of the ideal beautiful woman leaves Black women out, so to bridge this gap, a slightly different standard is applied to Black women. These opposing standards still leave many Black women out, as both standards are impossible for any woman to fulfill. This project will shed light on the negative impact these standards have on young Black women and act as a source of empowerment for all of them to feel valued. The final display will be a collection of three collages that will criticize the current beauty standards and offer an alternative solution to help young Black women feel valued. To ensure the desired impact on young Black women, the artist will conduct a media review to discover the most effective collage techniques that best relay the message to the audience that they are valuable.
